What is a heat collector?
A heat collector is a heat management product that recovers heat from engine exhaust gases and makes effective use of that heat.
This accelerates the warm-up of an engines and transmission (the heating of coolant and oil), thereby reducing fuel consumption and improving heater performance in cold areas.
This can also be used to heat the battery of a plug-in hybrid vehicle and reduce electricity consumption.
Mounting position
Structure
A heat collector consists of four elements: the heat exchange core, exhaust gas main channel, exhaust gas flow switching valve and valve actuator. During warm-up, when the engine coolant temperature reaches 80°C, the exhaust gas flow switching valve is closed to allow the exhaust gas to flow to the heat exchanger core side. After the engine is warmed , the exhaust gas flow switching valve is opened to allow the exhaust gas to flow to the exhaust gas main channel side.
The newly developed heat collector has the heat exchange core and exhaust gas main channel arranged coaxially, achieving significant size reduction. (54% of the previous product)
The coaxial arrangement of the heat exchange core and exhaust gas main channel had a disadvantage. Unnecessary heat was recovered even after warming up,. Now with the improved construction, the optimized pressure balance between the channels upstream and downstream of the heat exchange core has minimized such unnecessary heat recovery.

Yutaka's strengths
Product
Its primary characteristic, heat recovery performance, and the other functions it performs are comparable to the current product's, albeit with a considerably altered construction.
Yutaka offers two types of exhaust gas flow switching valve actuators; a thermal actuator and an electric actuator, allowing the selection according to needs.
Development capabilities
For heat collectors and other thermal management products, Yutaka is conducting various CAE analyses in the early stage of design for sophisticated product strategy without prototyping.
Also, Yutaka has many testing machines for evaluating thermal management products, thereby enabling accurate evaluation of developed products. The test results are fed back into CAE analyses to further enhance CAE accuracy.
Examples of CAE technologies
Heat exchange performance analysis
The amount of heat transferred from the exhaust gas to the coolant is calculated to predict the heat recovery performance.
Thermal stress analysis
Distortion caused by hot exhaust gases is calculated to predict the fatigue strength.
Examples of testing and evaluation technologies
Heat exchange performance testing
The performance is evaluated accurately with minimized measurement error in coolant temperature and gas flow rate.
Thermal durability testing
The thermal fatigue strength is evaluated with an exhaust gas simulator that supports a wide range of engine displacements.
